Dr. Riggs

The following details my research emphasis as of 10/2001. Papers written and research underway or funded is in bold. Problems awaiting student collaborators are in italic. Problems I want to find solutions to are between ?'s

  1. Knowledge Representation
    1. XML
      1. marking meaning with XML [XML and Free-text, R. Riggs, JASIS , to appear]
      2. casual database (MS thesis under way - Shawana Brown)
    2. semantic IR methods for XML
      1. search with 'unification' in MathML (open project for student)
      2. ?why is the 80/20 rule true?
    3. Semantic IR using Domain / task models
      1. for acute IR
      2. in Emergency Response [TIEMES 95, 96, Spill Tech Bull. 98]
      3. semantic IR methods [Dissertation '98]
        1. Knowledge based, Domain Centered IR [FLAIRS 97]
      4. models of common domains (MII)
        1. ?solve the problem of IR for intrusion reports?
        2. ?compare ontology, semantic net, Classification logic, XML ?
        3. ?what are the model theoretic limitations of SVD?
      5. web access to domain models
        1. variable axis display model display (Abernathy?)
      6. for Datamining/Knowledge Acquisition [Simple Extraction of Data from Forms, PADD 97]
      7. for CAI/distance learning
        1. presentation of Abstract Domains (also above)
        2. useful distance learning
          1. knowlets (modular construction of knowledge domains)
            1. ? are there meaningful closure properties?
          2. do-lets (integration of exploratory systems w/ CAI) [Tutor for 1PC - 84]
          3. how to link descriptive knowledge and active explorers
    4. models for heterogeneous DB's
  2. Software Engineering
    1. generic refactoring [W S Stoecklin, un-published]
    2. entropy of refactoring (Bathwater?)
    3. ?interpretation entropy (?!?!)
  3. Programming Languages
    1. representation of algorithms
    2. ?entropy of program codes [ACM SE 99]

A fundamental problem (for me) is how to measure the fit between a conceptualization and a representation. The hope is to define an interpretation function and a measure on that - but how to justify? what measure?
