RESEARCH
Dr. Riggs
The following details my research emphasis as of 10/2001.
Papers written and research underway or funded is in bold. Problems
awaiting student collaborators are in italic. Problems I want to
find solutions to are between ?'s
-
Knowledge Representation
-
XML
-
marking meaning with XML [XML and Free-text, R. Riggs, JASIS , to
appear]
-
casual database (MS thesis under way - Shawana Brown)
-
semantic IR methods for XML
-
search with 'unification' in MathML (open project for student)
-
?why is the 80/20 rule true?
-
Semantic IR using Domain / task models
-
for acute IR
-
in Emergency Response [TIEMES 95, 96, Spill Tech Bull. 98]
-
semantic IR methods [Dissertation '98]
-
Knowledge based, Domain Centered IR [FLAIRS 97]
-
models of common domains (MII)
-
?solve the problem of IR for intrusion reports?
-
?compare ontology, semantic net, Classification logic, XML ?
-
?what are the model theoretic limitations of SVD?
-
web access to domain models
-
variable axis display model display (Abernathy?)
-
for Datamining/Knowledge Acquisition [Simple Extraction of Data from
Forms, PADD 97]
-
for CAI/distance learning
-
presentation of Abstract Domains (also above)
-
useful distance learning
-
knowlets (modular construction of knowledge domains)
-
? are there meaningful closure properties?
-
do-lets (integration of exploratory systems w/ CAI) [Tutor for 1PC - 84]
-
how to link descriptive knowledge and active explorers
-
models for heterogeneous DB's
-
Software Engineering
-
generic refactoring [W S Stoecklin, un-published]
-
entropy of refactoring (Bathwater?)
-
?interpretation entropy (?!?!)
-
Programming Languages
-
representation of algorithms
-
?entropy of program codes [ACM SE 99]
A
fundamental problem (for me) is how to measure the fit between a conceptualization
and a representation. The hope is to define an interpretation function
and a measure on that - but how to justify? what measure?
