Description: CIS 5930 is a special topics class. We will work our way through the text but with the intention of digressing on topics of interest to the students or the instructor.  The focus is issues of  semi-structured databases as they occur / are reflected in XML. All students will do a report and a project. The best (A) students will produce either a project or report suitable for at least conference publication.

Required Background: Knowledge of discrete mathematics and logic. Knowledge of database models.

 

Goals:

  1. Learn basics of semi-strucured data. Learn XML (if you don't already know - may require other text materials)
  2. Develop a technical and formal understanding of  XML as it relates to semi-structured information.
  3. Closely examine a number of problems related to XML such as schema production and schema integration.
